Praha – The Czech Republic has been hit by an increase in coronavirus infections, reaching levels not seen since late April, the health ministry said on Wednesday.

The government was to meet later to approve new measures to contain the escalation.

The daily increase in new cases reached 3,246 on Tuesday, more than double the number of 1,507 cases a week ago. This was the highest number since April 20.

Of more than 100 new infections per 100,000 in 7 days, 117 were positive.

The spread of infectious diseases is accompanied by an increase in the number of people who require hospitalization and those who die.

A total of 620 COVID-19 patients were treated at the hospital on Tuesday, of which around 100 are in critical condition. This is more than double what it was two weeks ago.

51 people have died of COVID-19 in the last 7 days.

One of the hardest-hit EU countries, 1.7 million people have tested positive for the coronavirus and 30,574 have died.

In response to the worsening situation, the health ministry has proposed a number of measures, including mandatory face coverings at work and school.

We propose to limit the length of time a negative test is valid. The ministry also proposes that the state-funded health care system not pay for the tests people need to travel or visit restaurants and other public places and gatherings.

In 10.7 million countries, only over 6 million people have been fully vaccinated, which is less than the average for EU countries.
