Texas Republican Governor Alan West has tweeted that he has not been vaccinated for COVID-19 but could be hospitalized after a chest X-ray showed viral pneumonia.
“My oxygen saturation is 89, which should be 95,” West tweeted, adding in a follow-up tweet: “Chest X-ray is not serious and shows COVID pneumonia. I’m probably going to be in the hospital.”
Earlier that day, West’s campaign tweeted that his wife, who had been vaccinated for COVID-19, tested positive for the virus on Friday. In a source in the tweet, the campaign said he was “experiencing low-grade fever and mild physical pain” and canceled the face-to-face event until that was clarified. In the same thread, the campaign also said that West was taking hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin.
The US Food and Drug Administration says both drugs can cause serious health problems for people taking drugs to treat COVID-19.
Hydroxychloroquine is an anti-malarial drug that the FDA has said has “no benefit in reducing the chance of death or speeding up recovery.” Ivermectin is a drug used to treat parasites in humans and animals. “Currently available data do not show that ivermectin is effective against COVID-19,” the FDA said.
The West Campaign said in a tweet that it believes vaccination with COVID-19 should be a personal choice.
On October 7, West tweeted a photo of an event in Seabrook, a suburb of Houston, attending the evangelical mission generation, describing it as a “crowded house.” Two photos shared by West show the participants without masks.
West represented Florida in parliament from 2011 to 2013, moved to Texas in 2014, and became CEO of the National Center for Policy Analysis, a Dallas think tank that was shut down three years later.
Last year, West was elected party chairman and resigned in June to challenge Governor Greg Abbott in the next year’s Republican primary.
