Howell, Michigan. – A Michigan lawmaker has been accused of putting a handcuffed key in his leg after ordering him to put him in jail for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Officials said the keys were discovered after Detroit-area Democrat Jewel Jones was jailed Tuesday for breaching loan terms.
“He really believes he doesn’t have to obey the orders of the judge, nor does he have to follow the rules,” said Michael Murphy, the Livingston County sheriff who runs the prison. ..”
Jones, 26, returned to court on Wednesday and faces new major charges.
“The charges in this case allege that the defendant taped with clear tape the keys to the handcuffs on the soles of his feet, which he found while incarcerated by a prison officer in Livingston County,” the prosecutor said. Caroline Henry filed in court.
Defendant attorney Byron Nolan said Jewel is “aware of the gravity of the allegations.”
The sheriff said he did not know why Jones had the key in handcuffs.
“At the end of the day, people are handcuffed and removed from the facility. If anyone has the keys to handcuffs, it’s a bad day for us,” Murphy told the Livingston Daily Press & Argus.
Jones has been in court since April, when he was charged with drunk driving while protesting against police and other crimes. Proceedings are pending.
