BEIJING (Reuters) – Chinese President Xi Jinping urged Germany to promote a “right” policy toward China within the European Union in a phone call with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday, according to a Chinese state media report. .
According to a report on the call by CCTV, he also said that he expects an EU-China comprehensive agreement on investment to be ratified soon.
The deal on the investment, struck in late 2020, is unlikely to be backed by EU lawmakers, while Beijing keeps sanctions on five of its allies.
Xi said China looks forward to working with Germany and the international community towards peace and stability in Afghanistan.
US President Joe Biden and Xi held their first talks seven months ago on Friday, discussing the need to ensure that competition between the world’s two largest economies does not turn into conflict.
