Thousands of asylum-seekers (mostly from Haiti) are waiting to be processed and entered under Del Rio’s international bridge, according to Barbarde County Sheriff Joe Frank Martinez.

Del Rio said the sheriff has said an unusually large number of people have arrived recently, although migrant concerns have skyrocketed this year. On Saturday he said 2,500 migrants were waiting under the port at the entry bridge. As of Thursday morning, he said the number had risen to around 8,400.

Martinez estimates that about 70% of the immigrants came from Haiti. In Haiti, the president was assassinated in July and a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck in August, destroying thousands of homes.

According to Martinez, migrants trying to flee are sent to wait under the bridge and given tickets to show that their turn will be processed.

“The border guards are heavy,” he said. “There is a backlog of these individuals under the bridge because they cannot process them fast enough. They are not tied and simply gather while waiting for their turn to be processed. . “

US Congressman Tony Gonzalez talks about Haiti’s immigrant rise under Del Rio’s bridge

US Congressman Tony Gonzalez, visiting the camp on Thursday, said: “It’s the worst I’ve ever been in. There’s no southern border. It’s chaotic. It’s like there was a flash bomb here in Del Rio.”

Republican Gonzales, who represents District 23, including Del Rio, said he blamed Biden’s surge and urged White House officials to “engage, get involved and do something.” He said migrants who do not qualify for asylum need to return to their home countries.

Federal agencies recorded 5,196 encounters with Haitians in the Del Rio sector in August, a 25% increase from the previous month, according to the latest US Customs and Border Protection data.
