WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said on Tuesday it plans to introduce new software features to reduce taxi times and reduce congestion for flights at 27 airports.

The FAA and NASA said the new software has been tested for four years to calculate gate pushback at busy centers “to allow each aircraft to roll over and take off directly on the runway.” The FAA said it expects to save more than 7 million gallons of fuel annually and reduce CO2 emissions by more than 75,000 tons when deployed.
