Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Thursday ratified the idea of a federal carbon tax at the 2021 annual shareholders meeting.
In his view, the three parts of a “sustainable future” are solar and wind, batteries for energy storage, and electric vehicles of all kinds, including cars, boats, and planes.

Carbon taxes, or taxes on greenhouse gas emissions, have long been proposed as a way to reduce emissions of climate change-causing gases, particularly carbon dioxide. Some advocates believe that carbon taxes should be increased over time to give industry time to find and deploy low-carbon alternatives to products and processes that emit CO2.
According to the New York Times, more than 40 governments have adopted some price for carbon, but the United States has not.
The carbon tax could help Tesla by making gas more expensive, making electric cars more attractive, raising energy prices, and encouraging homeowners to adopt solar panels from Tesla and other providers. Tesla also confirmed on Thursday that it has moved its headquarters to Austin.
Musk expects the Texas plant called Giga Austin to follow in the footsteps of Tesla’s Shanghai plant, which produces more electric vehicles than the original plant in Fremont, California. ..

Tesla also said last year that it designed and manufactured its 4680 battery cells at its facility in Fremont, Calif.
Musk did not provide up-to-date information on the timing of the $25,000 electric vehicle on Thursday.
But he said Tesla will not produce the 4680 battery cells in Texas this year. Instead, Fremont’s facility will produce these cells and ship them to Texas as Model Y production increases.
Long-term Musk said he believes the crossover utility vehicle is likely to be Tesla’s bestseller and is more popular than the Model 3 sedan.
Tesla said earlier this month that it delivered 241,300 electric vehicles in the third quarter of 2021 and produced 237,823 vehicles during the same period.
Delivery is the closest estimate of sales reported by Tesla. The company set a new record as shipments from other automakers declined compared to the same period last year, mainly due to supply chain issues, including global chip shortages.
Musk said on Thursday he does not believe global supply chain problems will be completely resolved by 2023.
