It’s not just Gyllenhaal and Mendes. A few other men dial up the quirkiness of the white suit—a real fashion freak if you do. Designer Virgil Abloh showed the Met Gala a sloppy blazer with “modernism” on her chest, airbrushed with baby blue paint and paired with the wildest pants of the night. (Without the collaboration, Abloh wouldn’t have fit. She used mural painter and artist Charlie Buss for the airbrush art.)
At the exact same event, Timothée Chalamet appeared in a complex combination of Haider Ackerman, Rick Owens and Converse. I wore a jacket with sweatpants and sneakers in a way that only young people could beat. And finally, the combination of Russell Westbrook’s white cardigan and nearly full-length skirt (both Tom Brown) counts as an unconventional way to wear a white boat in mid-September.
Wearing a white suit is always an important style move, but the risks are often worth the reward. And against the backdrop of today’s deliberately bad but good suit, the fresh white worn a few days after the official fall season isn’t as dangerous as it once was. As we get older, the bold and chaotic tailoring continues, and perhaps most importantly, fun. Yes, that includes a white suit—even after Labor Day.
