Foxx spoke to the Associated Press about preparing to portray his two daughters, Corinne, now 27, actor and producer, father of 13-year-old Anneliese, and boxing icon Mike Tyson.
AP: You’re writing about realizing some hard truths, like when you go to treatment with your older daughter and she says she doesn’t like you.
Foxx: I was sitting there and found out I was the father of Disneyland. All the emotional pits, I was just going to fill it with a Disney ride or some indulgence. Then I heard my daughter say to the therapist, “I hate my father.” And he said, “Dad, you don’t need it. You cover up. Just come talk to me.” And those moments were important.
AP: You’ve learned that being there is of the utmost importance, even if you have the privilege of being a celebrity.
Foxx: I want them to know that my dad is up no matter what. You may be tired or sleepy. And yet, they can make me even more responsible. But I wanted to be there. I want them to hit my chest and teach me anything. And from my parenting experience, I learned that there are people who don’t show up in my parents, so I wanted to stop that emotional domino.
AP: The term girl dad is used quite often. What does that mean to you?
Foxx: I have a girl who is afraid to talk about certain things. What I tell my dad is to talk about him and talk about him early. Talk about it now. Because by the time you get to 15, 16, you’ll have that unpleasant situation so you don’t get in the way of a comfortable place at 10, 11, and 12, and if they have real problems, you already have that is the foundation. Because we are building. under. That’s the essence of girl daddy.
