WASHINGTON (AP) – Monday’s Biden administration reverses a family planning clinic ban on abortion referrals and lifts a Trump-era ban as the political and legal battle over abortion intensifies from Texas to the floor of the US Supreme Court.
The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare said the new regulation would return the federal family planning program to the way it was implemented under the Obama administration, when clinics were able to refer women seeking abortions to health care providers. HHS Secretary Javier Becerra said the goal is to “strengthen and restore” services.
A group representing the clinic will restore some 1,300 local facilities abandoned by the Biden administration’s actions in protest of Trump’s policies, in addition to fighting idealistically to stabilize a long-running program hit by the coronavirus pandemic. He said he expected help.
“I’ve heard that in almost every region of the country, we’ve determined that the conditions for returning to the program are good,” said Claire Coleman, president of the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association, an affiliate group. an interview. “In my understanding, people were waiting for the rules.”
Planned Parenthood, the largest service provider, said on Twitter it was looking forward to the return of the health center. However, the group criticized some of the Biden administration’s rules for not providing referrals to individual physicians who oppose abortion. The administration said it was “in compliance with applicable federal law.”
