A few days before the March 2020 pandemic, I started my first full-time job as a Marketing Coordinator at a dental clinic in Columbus, Ohio. There the annual salary was $34,500.

Every day, the office was booked with a client who was trying to get teeth whitening and veneers. But when the pandemic intensified and the mask obligation came into force, I remember: Why are all these people doing dental cosmetology work when a smile is hidden behind a mask?

It became clear how much the upper part of our face affects our facial expressions. I have noticed that I am particularly into reading people’s emotions through their eyes and eyebrows.

So I began researching Microblades, a semi-permanent tattoo procedure that draws small strokes (different hair sizes) on the browbones.

When I wasn’t working in the dentist’s office, I attended a microblade class. For months, I practiced for hours every day.

Eventually, what started as a hobby turned into a profitable side. I met about 5 clients in a week and earned at least $7,200 per month. This is almost three times the amount you would earn from your dental office job.

After working both for three months in June of this year, I decided to quit my daily job and switch side of MicroBlade to a full-time business. I named it Columbus Cosmetic Inc.

Today, I bring in about $8,750 in sales each month, including tips. Of course, there are challenges associated with running your own company. But at 25, I know there’s a lot to learn as you grow your business.

Most importantly, I am the happiest I have ever been.

Here are my top tips for anyone looking to start a side hustle or a full-time business:

1. First Create a Business Plan

Before building a website and registering Columbus Cosmetic Inc. in the county, I created a business plan.

You don’t need any business degree to make it. The mine wasn’t perfect, but it was a way to capture key factors such as customer demand, start-up costs, financial forecasting, and marketing strategies.

We also track trends with our competitors. Running full-time was a risk, but having that business plan gave me confidence and readiness.

I am currently working on clients of a small suite in a salon, which is much cheaper than leasing the entire storefront. It also lets other customers visiting the salon know about my business.

Suites in my area range from $200 to $300 per week. As my business grows, I plan to rent out a larger space of my own.

2. Consider Working For Free Temporarily

One of the hardest parts of rolling a side hustle is attracting customers. I Knew I Was a Genius Microblade Artist, But Others People didn’t know this. So to gain their confidence in my craft, I had to build a portfolio.

We began marketing our service using the neighborhood app Nextdoor, where you can share local tips. When I posted “Models Wanted: Free Microblading,” it got a lot of attention and interest.

My top seller is “Cocoa Brow,” which costs $450 and includes a free touch-up.

I helped people get the eyebrows of their dreams in exchange for promoting them, and each gave a $100 gift voucher to give to a friend.

It was my expectation to work for free temporarily, so I saved as much money as I could before quitting my job. If you can’t afford to work for free, consider charging a small fee to cover some of your supply costs.

Having enough customers to post photos on websites and social media led to a flood of more customer bookings. Then I started charging the full amount, which depends on the specific process.

The biggest seller is my signature “Cocoa Brow,” which costs $450. It includes free touch-ups and lasts for about 1.5-2 years.

3. Love what you are doing and keep on mastering your skills

I have always been excited about everything related to cosmetology. I was also a freelance makeup artist when I was in college.

She has also worked at cosmetics retailer Ulta Beauty, where she learned how to match clients’ complexions and use different shapes, colors, and techniques to complement a variety of skin types and facial structures. ..

The main reason I am so excited to go to work every day is because of my clients. Believe it or not, good eyebrows can give you confidence and change your life.

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to work on a breast cancer survivor who had lost all of her eyebrows due to chemotherapy treatment. After getting her eyebrows done, I gave her a mirror, and she burst into tears.

Such emotional moments make my work even more rewarding.

4. Work hard and be ready to make sacrifices

Creating your own work hours offers a lot of freedom, but it doesn’t necessarily mean less work.

When I was working in a full-time dental office—and Columbus Cosmetic Inc. was still a side hustle—I worked 60 to 70 hours a week. From time to time I had to sacrifice social life, sleep, lunch breaks and leisure time.

The main reason I am so excited to go to work every day is my clients.

More importantly, I had to cut down on groceries, shopping, and eating out. I needed to know that there was enough money in my savings to cover the costs of supplies, taxes, suite rent, etc.

I don’t regret the risks and sacrifices I took to get here. Starting my own business has long been a dream, but I still remember the sound of Unreal.

For me, the silver lining of the pandemic was that I realized my life was too short to do anything because it “seems like a lot of work.” In some cases, you can’t wait for the opportunity to happen and you need to make it happen.
