WASHINGTON – One of the nation’s busiest ports works 24 hours a day to remove cargo bottlenecks that lead to shortages and rising consumer costs. The change was announced by the White House ahead of the holidays with the aim of addressing supply chain problems. ..
The Port of Los Angeles is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, connecting with the neighboring Port of Long Beach, California, which began doing the same last month. Major ports in Asia and Europe operate round the clock for many years.
According to the White House, expanded operations at the Port of Los Angeles will nearly double the amount of cargo travel time. He said the additional shifts were agreed upon by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union on behalf of the dock workers.
Long Beach Port struggled to increase cargo flow after increasing its opening hours. Truckers complained that limiting container loading and unloading was a hassle. Shortage of truck drivers and warehouse personnel is also creating problems in the supply chain. It is unknown how many Los Angeles terminals will be operational 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and when they will be operational.
Port of Los Angeles managing director Jean Cerocca said the details of the night are still under consideration with supply chain companies.
“Today’s announcement has the potential to be a game changer,” President Biden said. “Not all of these products work on their own, so I say likely. In order to make a positive impact for families and across the country, major retailers are ordering products. We need to store and ship goods to factories and shops. A freight carrier is also required to carry.”
US supply chains are struggling to adapt to a surge in imports as consumers shift from services to home goods, including electronics, and businesses race to replenish their pandemic and dwindling inventories . .. The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach hold hundreds of thousands of containers. These ports are the gateway to the West Coast, which carries over a quarter of all US imports. Dozens of ships are swamped offshore, with wait times of three weeks.
The roar of the supply chain led to higher prices and increased inflation, which intensified slightly in September and posed another challenge for Mr Biden, whose policy agenda was bound by parliamentary talks. The government faces a range of supply chain problems affecting everything from wood to semiconductors and has sought ways to partner with private companies to reduce the backlog.

According to the White House, the commitment of the six companies will allow an additional 3,500 containers to be moved nightly each week.
During the first eight months of this year, the adjacent ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach processed more than 13.6 million containers, measured in units equal to 20 feet. This is a trade indicator for the shipping industry. This includes the equivalent of 893,098 inbound containers loaded in August, or more than 200,000 each week.

“It is a good first step, but it is very surprising, a measure of how serious it is, and the personal involvement of the President of the United States is required to implement this explicit measure. It seems,” Björn van Jensen says. Vice President of Global Supply Chain for Sea Intelligence APS, a Danish-based oceanographic data company.
“It is also encouraging to see President Biden meeting with importers and representatives of both the truck and rail communities,” he said. “Without the full involvement of all these supply chain components, the port could be left open 24 hours a day, as containers just piled up in the yard.”
There was disagreement among the major players in the supply chain, which included port workers, truck drivers, warehouse operators, railroads and retailers, working almost 24/7, point-and-point.
Southern California ports are generally open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays. It is only open for a limited time on Saturdays and is usually closed on Sundays.
When Long Beach Port initially expanded its business hours to 24 hours a day, 4 days a week, truck companies could not attract any more trucks, saying the process was cumbersome. Noel Hasegaba, deputy secretary general of the Port of Long Beach, said the schedule has been adjusted to ease restrictions in recent weeks and some truck drivers have started spending hours in the morning.
Some terminal operators say that there is no point in extending the time if the regular pickup slots are not used by the truck drivers. Sarfarinho, vice president of SSA Terminals, which operates three terminals on Long Beach, said:
Truckers say they are plagued by a lack of equipment needed to transport containers and warehouses that are either full or open within a limited amount of time.
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen confirmed in an interview with CBS Evening News on Tuesday that there was some shortage in the coming months.
“But the goods are well supplied,” she said. “And I don’t think there’s any reason consumers are upset that they don’t have the products they want to buy for Christmas.”
