Detroit-Jeep on Wednesday announced the first Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrid that attempts to transform an SUV from a gas guzzler to a “green” car.

The new 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe has an estimated 25 miles of total power range before switching to a 4-cylinder turbocharged engine to power the vehicle. Arriving at dealer showrooms early next year, a new family of redesigned Grand Cherokee SUVs will be complete.

“The Jeep Grand Cherokee is our global flagship and will lead the Jeep brand into a new era of premium sophistication, innovative technology, advanced 4×4 capabilities and electrification,” said Christian Munier, Jeep CEO. said in a statement.

A new three-row version of the Grand Cherokee was launched earlier this year. Traditional two-row models offering the V-6 and V-8 internal combustion engines will arrive in US showrooms in the fourth quarter. The all-new 5th generation Grand Cherokee SUV has received redesigned interiors and exteriors.

According to Jeep, the Grand Cherokee 4xe combines two electric motors, a 400-volt battery pack and a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine to produce 375 horsepower and 470 ft-pounds of torque. With an estimated EPA rating of 57MPG, its overall driving range is estimated to exceed 440 miles when fully charged and filled with gas.

The 2022 Grand Cherokee 4Xe will be Jeep’s second plug-in hybrid electric vehicle in the United States. We will join the Wrangler plug-in hybrid electric vehicle launched earlier this year.

Prices for the two-row 2022 Grand Cherokee, including the 4xe, have not been announced. Starting prices for the three-row version range from around $39,000 to $65,000.

Jeep is expected to be a key part of the development and electrification program of its new parent company, the Stelantis, which was established earlier this year through the merger of Fiat Chrysler and French carmaker Groupe PSA. By 2025, the company has invested at least $35.5 billion (€30 billion) in electric vehicles and support technology.

Munier says the all-new Jeep will deliver some form of electrification in the years to come. These plans will include not only electric vehicles, but also hybrid vehicles and PHEVs that combine electrification with internal combustion engines such as the Grand Cherokee and Wrangler 4xe models.

Jeep plans to introduce the first all-electric vehicle in 2023. Earlier this year, we announced an all-electric concept version of the Wrangler SUV, called the “Magneto.”
